Knit Wits!

August sees The Ladies Room talking about crafts.
Which Craft? guest  Lee Ann Stremke writes:
Our Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club's (NNNC) Knifty Knitters group, started knitting together about three years ago when a couple of our members were interested in learning how to knit.  Our expert knitter, Mary Huth, was more than happy to teach us.  We started back then with just a few members and over the last three years have to grown to 18 members.  We meet almost every Tuesday and spend the afternoon chatting, enjoying dessert and honing our knitting skills.  We welcome beginners and advanced knitters.
Knifty Knitters is open to anyone who is a member of NNNC.  NNNC currently has 400 members that enjoy over 40 different activities - everything from cooking groups to book clubs; movie group to investment group, quilting to card making, monthly luncheons, charity events and much more.  Please feel free to visit our website for our membership form and take a look at all the activities we enjoy.

Calorie Free Chocolate!

Chocolate Panache guest Brooke Llewellyn may be famous for her chocolate facials, but that’s not all she does. Her spa salon, tucked away in unit 305 at 2272 95th Street, Naperville, offers a complete range of treatments for mind, muscles and skin.
Muscular therapies include several massages, with a special package aimed at mothers-to-be.
Brooke says: “Many people suffer from muscular problems, which can lead to a variety of other imbalances in the body. Massage therapy is an effective tool and approach to assist in correcting and releasing those imbalances.”

How much do you know about chocolate? Try our simple quiz to test your knowledge.

1.       Does chocolate really grow on trees?

Ans: Yes! Cocao seeds come from the cacao fruit of the Theobroma cacao tree, which grows in the area between 20 degrees north and 20 degrees south of the equator.

2.       Isn’t cocao just cocoa misspelt?

Ans: No. Cocoa is not the same as cacao. Cocoa is half cacao, half cocoa butter.

3.       When did chocolate bars first appear?

Ans: Chocolate was served in liquid form until sometime around 1660 when crude versions of chocolate bars began appearing in London.

4.       What is the most complex food known to man (and woman)?
Ans:  Cacao. It has 512 and counting complex compounds. Broccoli is next with just 60. I know       which I prefer…..

Thanks to our Chocolate Panache guest Cathy Bouchard for this information. For more information visit her website www.lechocolatbar.com, or better still visit her store on Washington Street in downtown Naperville.

Model Mom

Have you always wanted a TV make-over? Lucky Ladies Room make-over star Jayne Saunderson tells us what it was like….

“Do you need a make-over?” the tantalizing facebook message posed. Yes, please!
The Ladies Room was offering the chance to transform someone under the expert guidance of Zano Salon and Day Spa and Two K Productions. I set to work to explain why I, a forty something Mom of two, could warrant this special treatment and it worked! I was THRILLED.
Being a busy Mom it’s often easy to put taking care of yourself way down on the list of priorities. Here was a change for that to be bumped to the top of the list and I just had to sit back and watch the magic happen.
My makeover included two consultations with the Zano professionals in downtown Naperville. On my first visit my hair was cut, treated and subtly color enhanced. My eyes were also opened up with an eyebrow shape and a new experience but one that will certainly be repeated, a lip wax! All under the watchful glare of the NCTV cameras.
From there Two K Productions took me under their wing and we visited a luxury downtown Naperville boutique to be outfitted. I have unwritten rules, like most women I suppose, on what is flattering for my shape and what I feel most comfortable in. The Two Ks were able to break me free from this thinking and I discovered the world of skinny jeans  - a no, no for me in my previous life. Teamed with a fabulous rabbit vest and another taboo, the bat wing sleeve, I felt like a million dollars.
On the morning of the show taping I received the royal treatment at Zano’s. My hair was teased into its sleek new shape and my makeup was professionally applied with an airbrush. I certainly felt like I was appearing on a television show.
Experiencing behind the scenes and the taping of The Ladies Room was another thrill. I made new friends and got a brand new look. Thanks so much Zano, the Two Ks and The Ladies Room. What a fabulous experience.”

Be a Fashion Sista at the 630 Fashion Show

You don’t have to travel to New York, London or Paris to experience a first class fashion show. Did you know Naperville has its very own version?
Founded by The Ladies Room stylists Kristen Frederick and Kristy Brezinsky, this September marks the fifth annual 630 Fashion Show at the Hotel Arista.
If you thought last year’s show as featured in our Fabulous Fashion program looked fun, make sure you save the date for September 28th 2012.
As well as featuring local and Chicago based designers, the show also benefits local non profits 360 Youth Services and Almost Home Kids.
Kristy said:  “630 Fashion Show 2011 exceeded our expectations!  We doubled our contributions to our not-for-profit organizations increased event attendance by 40%, and raised awareness for local businesses in the 630 area code.”

Kristen added: “This year is our event’s 5th year anniversary!!!!!  We are proud to reach that milestone and have many unique and exciting things in store for this year’s show!!!   Local boutiques will be featured on our runway, and top Chicago designers will be showcased to attract more attendees, draw more press for the event, and keep the production fresh.”

Although the show is sponsored by Calamos, Glancer Magazine and Sound Investment, there are still other sponsorship opportunities.

Kristy says: “There are many different sponsorship levels listed below and a variety of price points.”

It’s a great way to tell Naperville women about your business.

Contact Kristy Brezinsky on  (630-405-9120) or  Kristen Frederick (630-518-6947), or send an email to www.twokproduction@hotmail.com for more details.

Spring Style at Zano's

On this month's show Fabulous Fashion, we talked about how women can sometimes be afraid to commit to a new look. Ladies Room guest Denise Provenzano of Zano’s salons has devised a simple idea you can try right now!

“Not ready to commit to a new color or cut? A perfect way to for you commitment-phobes to change up your look is to change up your part,” says Denise. “Both straight-down-the-center and deep side parts are big looks this spring, take only seconds to achieve, and can be worn on short or long hair and curly or straight hair - making this trend a win/win...win.”

Zano’s, who have five locations, also offer products for women who want to keep their locks looking good at home.
“For the ladies with lovely long locks who want free-flowing spring-sexy hair minus oily roots and dry ends we bring to you the new line from Kerastase – Cristalliste,” says Denise. “The shampoo washes away oil at the scalp while the lightweight conditioner nourishes ends without weighing hair down. Finally the serum locks in moisture and shine making hair run-your-fingers-through-it soft and perfect for effortless spring style.”
Zano’s offers more than hair styling. As well as full spa treatments, you can also have a manicure and pedicure. Denise recommends Shellac in place of regular nail polish.
She says: “This gel-polish hybrid goes on easy, lasts up to 14 days, and comes off in a snap. Our guests (and staff too) can't get enough”
Shellac comes in 36 colors from brilliantly bold to sexily subtle. For more information about all Zano’s services and locations visit www.zanosalons.com.

Why The Wait For The Ladies Room May Have Been A Little Longer Than Expected

Until yesterday I thought actually screening the show was the easy bit. After more than a year in production I was looking forward to finally being able to share it with the four people I’d managed to bribe to watch it. Alas, not so.

The first airing turned out to be 30 minutes of rolling black screen punctuated by several frantic calls to the station. It did run half an hour late, but by then I imagine everyone had given up watching. The good thing is the show is repeated multiple times through the month, so at 10 p.m. I settled down to watch again.

This time was a little more successful. The black screen of death only lasted 10 minutes.

Finally the reviews were in, but alas none of them seemed to refer to the actual show. “Help, I can’t see it.” “All I get is a black screen” “You’re going up against The Tonight Show, seriously?” were just some of the comments I received. (Ok, the last one was from me, but worth sharing I think).

The good news is there are still plenty of opportunities to tune in, which probably means a ton more problems.

If you don’t live in Naperville, and why wouldn’t you? you can watch the show streaming live on www.nctv17.com, the station’s website.

I’ve had countless (well six) calls about people having problems with this too. However, it’s really the same problem because if the show is late on TV, it’ll be late streaming too, so bear with it. Remember, the quality will not be as good as on your television set, and to be honest that won’t be as good as your other stations. (The show itself is actually the best thing on TV, I mean how it views of course).

Confused? Ladies Room director David Sapadin explains:

“Most folks have high definition TV's these days. But nothing looks worse on a Hi Def set than programming that is both analog instead of digital AND not shot in high definition. In Naperville on Comcast and WOW, only one channel fits that category....NCTV Channel 17.”

The reason for this is NCTV is a community station supported locally so there simply isn’t the money to bring it up to speed.

According to David the best way to watch is on a non Hi Def TV in which case I recommend you look in your attics and local antique stores right away!

Reality Check with Nicki Anderson

Welcome to The Ladies Room’s very first guest Nicki Anderson.

Nicki has owned and operated the award winning Reality Fitness, Inc. Personal Training studio in downtown Naperville since 1991. As a successful business owner and sought after speaker, Nicki’s enthusiasm and business prowess on subjects including customer service, marketing and deconditioned populations, makes her a sought after international speaker.

Nicki is the 2008/2009 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year, IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year Finalist in 2006 and 2007 and 2006 IHRSA Top 25 Fresh Faces. She is the author of numerous books, her most recent, Nicki Anderson's Single Step Weight Loss and 101 Ways to Motivate Your Clients and Increase Retention (Healthy Learning, 2009). Nicki is the health and fitness columnist for Chicago Suburban Newspapers, IDEA Editorial Board and contributor to numerous magazines and websites including, MSNBC.com, Forbes.com and FitnessMagazine.com, Real Simple, Prevention, Women’s Health and Women’s Running, Men’s Health and Fitness. Nicki was recently named one of Chicagoland’s Top Personal Trainers.

Although it’s hard to believe it from looking at her now, as a teen Nicki had a weight problem, seeking help from Weight Watchers.

Nicki says: “Back in 1978, WW was significantly different. It really wasn’t a “diet” like we know today, it was an education in healthy eating, a healthy diet. For the first time in years, I abstained from eating fast food, started moving more and ate fruits and vegetables every day. Since that time, weight loss strategies and the ridiculous number of fast-n-easy diets has dramatically changed people’s relationship with food. Instead of discovering how food can work with their body, many people are fighting weight loss and food has become their weapon of choice.”

Nicki believes the way to attack obesity now is with exercise and good nutrition.

“I believe it’s time to walk away from the world of diets that does nothing to encourage healthy eating options, simply calorie focus,” she says. “It’s time to realize that if diets were great, obesity and disease would decline, not the case. Getting back to basics with a focus on plant based nutrition, locally grown produce, small farms we can support, we will not only find a wonderful difference in the health of our body, we will discover a great way to positively impact our environment.”
